Types of Russian Dwarf Hamster
February 23, 2021There are three different types of dwarf hamster belonging to the same genus, Phodopus.
The Campbell’s dwarf hamster grows to approximately 9.1cm in length although they tend to be a bit smaller in the wild. Lifespan varies but is typically around one to two years. They have smaller ears and a narrower dorsal stripe than the winter white. They are typically nocturnal although you may see them active for short periods during the day. Campbell’s hamsters generally have a laid back temperament but may nip if frightened or stressed. They can happily live in pairs or small communities providing the hamsters have grown up together. They do not introduce well to new hamsters and some pairs or communities will need to be broken up if they begin to fight.
The Winter White has a slightly smaller, rounder body than the Campbell’s hamster growing to approximately 8cm in length. The lifespan is similar at one to two years. They get their name from their changing coat which turns white in the winter although this may not happen in captivity. Their sleeping pattern is the same as the Campbell’s hamster and temperament is generally good, they are quite easy to tame. Many Winter Whites for sale are hybrids of the Campbell’s hamster and Winter White. Although they are two distinct species it is possible for them to crossbreed, although this is not recommended. Hybrids will generally still make good pets although they are known to carry a myriad of health problems.
Roborovski hamsters are much smaller reaching a length of only 5cm. They tend to live around 3 years. They are typically sandy in colour with a white belly. They do not have a dorsal stripe. Roborovskis are nocturnal and most active at night. Their temperament is good and they rarely bite, although they can be shy and easily startled. This combined with their extraordinary speed means they can be very difficult to handle. They are generally less affectionate than other types of hamster.
