Bengal Cats – What to Expect
March 6, 2021Bengals have a bit of a reputation because of their high-energy, high-maintenance personalities and exotic looks but what are they really like? The answer, like with most cats, is that it pretty much depends on the personality of the individual cat, but there are a few things you can expect.
They really do have a lot of energy
Bengals are hyperactive. Your regular moggy looks positively relaxed in comparison. We’ve witnessed bengals literally bouncing off the walls and power hour can last half a day. They need a lot of play time and typically enjoy games like crashing through the house racing after a feather toy. It does somewhat depend on the cat – one prefers a gently wiggled ribbon and a game of fetch – but do prepare for energy the likes of which you’ve never seen.
They can be loud
Bengals have a voice on them and some really like hearing it. Some are chatty and will happily have a conversation with you, some will complain at great length and volume. Bengals that were quiet for the years have been to know to start serenading their owners in the dead of night. If you don’t like chatty cats it’s possible that bengals aren’t for you.
They are more prone to problems
Health problems such as sensitive digestive systems are common amongst bengals, as are behavioural problems. The first is good to be aware of, the second can almost certainly be solved with owner commitment. Bengals can be a little more work when an issue arises. Their high energy means they are more prone to boredom, anxiety and lashing out. They are extremely persistent in habits and it takes patience to train them out of undesirable behaviour. But with the right attention these problems can be solved swiftly.
They want to be involved in everything
Bengals love attention, they’re curious, and they’re very interested in just about everything you will do. They’ll clear off your bookshelves and tables, they’ll get in your toolbox, they’ll help with your crafts. They’ll even accompany you to the bathroom. Whatever you do, don’t forget to include your furry friends or they’ll invite themselves.
They’re extremely loving
With high maintenance comes high reward. Bengals are typically very affectionate and form a strong bond with their owners. They love hugs, persistently demand affection and will give it back in spades. If you’ve ever wanted a dedicated lap cat to curl up with several hours a day, bengals will provide. They are genuinely happy to see their owners and love nothing more than a cuddle at the end of a busy day.
